Alain Resnais’s psychological portrait of an ageing revolutionary, suffering from ethical, existential, and ideological crises, depicting his return from Madrid to Paris, where he was part of the Communist underground’s continuing attempts to dislodge Fascist dictator Franco from power, is a more conventional work than his previous efforts, and as a consequence perhaps a little less dazzling, but certainly no less insightful or compelling.
