Bouchareb’s well-meaning and important film – following a troop of Algerian soldiers in the French army, fighting against the Nazis towards the and of the Second World War, highlighting the inequalities inherent in the French military system – has perhaps one or two (or twelve) clichés too many to be taken totally seriously, but excellent production values and good performances ensure that it is never anything less than watchable.
