With its alternately playful and unsettling mise en scène and universally convincing performances, Curtiz’s jolting noir-cum-melodrama, an adaptation of Cain’s novel about a mother who gives up just about everything for her ungrateful, snobby, materialistic, and desperately-in-need-of-a-good-slapping eldest daughter, is a parenting cautionary tale quiet unlike any other.
