Welles’s audacious noir provides a reflexive examination of police corruption, combining flamboyant yet elegant camerawork, a disquieting soundtrack, and some cracking performances (not the least of which being Welles’s own cynical turn), in what proves to be a powerfully brilliant film, containing a number of quite unforgettable set-pieces.
