Although some of the more expansive numbers can get a little tedious, and the film’s attitude towards class is more than a little dubious, this cracking musical, set in a Hollywood studio at the birth of the talkies, boasting a quartet of outstanding performances, is an absolute toe-tapping, whistle-along delight.
