Reichardt and Raymond follow up their previous collaboration, the solemnly beautiful Old Joy (2006), with this deeply moving and achingly sad film in which a down-on-her-luck young woman (the excellent Williams), on her way to Alaska in search of work, encounters a number of financially triggered problems that eventually lead her to lose her beloved dog, Lucy, the one and only ray of hope in her otherwise rather bleak existence.
