Burum’s dreamy black and white photography and Copeland’s incredible, disquieting score give Coppola’s second collaboration with S.E. Hinton (after the disappointing The Outsiders) a decidedly surreal feel, and as such its tale of teenaged gangs and knife fights, revolving around the return of the mythical figure of The Motorcycle Boy, is strangely sensual and melancholically attractive in its fatalism.
